The Energy Technology Systems Analysis Program (ETSAP) is the Technology Collaboration Programme of the International Energy Agency (IEA). The IEA-ETSAP leads a major initiative for open source solutions for energy scenario modelling, i.e. MARKAL/TIMES modelling frameworks.

The Swiss Competence Center for Energy Research - Efficient Technologies and Systems for Mobility (SCCER Mobility) aims at developing the knowledge and technologies essential for the transition from the current fossil fuel based transportation system to a sustainable one, featuring
minimal CO2 output, primary energy demand as well as virtually zero-pollutant emissions.

The Energy Economics Group in the Laboratory for Energy Systems Analysis at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) contributes to understanding of energy technology development and identifies policy strategies for the realisation of sustainable energy systems at Swiss and global levels.

The IEA-ETSAP autumn workshop will be held during 11-12 December 2017 at ETH, Zurich. As the transport sector becomes the key challenging sector for mitigating climate change, researchers across the globe are challenged to find solutions.

We organize a joint special session on “Decarbonising the transport sector – how far can we go?” on 12 December 2017 (8:30 – 12:00). We invite interested researchers to attend and to submit papers focused on the future developments of the transport sector, for instance scoping on:

  • How are long-term decarbonisation pathways assessed in other countries?
  • What are the technological options available?
  • What are the policy instruments that can take innovative technologies to market/consumer?
  • What are the challenges and opportunities?
  • Other aspects of transportation

Please register for attending this session at the IEA-ETSAP workshop registration page. Please indicate in the registration form if you only attend this special. mobility focused session and not the other sessions of the IEA-ETSAP workshop.

For further information on this mobility session, please contact Kannan Ramachandran (kannan.ramachandran@psi.ch).

Scholarship for TIMES energy modelling training!

TIMES (The Integrated MARKAL-EFOM System) is a well-established software platform for energy modelling developed by the IEA-ETSAP (Energy Technology Systems Analysis Program). TIMES is typically used for scenario analyses focusing on energy technology and policies (e.g. long-term energy system transformation). ETSAP organises an introductory three-day TIMES training course in Zurich during 13-15 December 2017. Registration and program details are available at the ETSAP webpage (http://www.iea-etsap.org/index.php/training).

To attend this TIMES training course, ETSAP is sponsoring 2-3 scholarship for Master/PhD students from the Swiss institutions. The sponsorship covers only the course fee (commuting/accommodation cost are not covered). Interested students can apply for this scholarship by sending a small motivation letter and CV to Kannan Ramachandran via email (kannan.ramachandran@psi.ch) latest by 10 November 2017.
