Sensor testing and perception guaranties in automated driving

Dejan Milojevic

In this presentation, we will talk about the sensing of automated vehicles in order to guarantee safety and reliability. First, the new Empa project about testing sensors of automated vehicles will be presented. We are aiming at finding the necessary minimum technical requirements for automated driving sensors, which we are exploring with field tests during real world driving as well as with emulations in laboratories under different environmental and contamination conditions. Then the research question is introduced about how can we guarantee the minimum necessary amount of information for autonomous systems through sensing and perception, so that planning and control tasks can be completed safely and efficiently.

Prospective environmental footprint of passenger cars: going beyond direct emissions

Romain Sacchi

With an increasing share of electric vehicles (EV) on the road, estimating the environmental footprint and costs of passenger cars relies more and more on modelling the upstream services in time and space. This webinar explains how the focus of life cycle assessments (LCA) of passenger cars at Paul Scherrer Institute shifts away from direct emissions from internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEV) to modelling future regional and global energy-intensive sectors (e.g. electricity, steel, cement, etc.) using integrated assessment models (IAM). These commodities will become directly and indirectly critical to the production and use of EVs. A new tool for prospective LCA of passenger cars, carculator, will also be presented. It integrates the outputs of such sector-based modelling work and allows for time-and-space-specific analyses for the wider audience.
